15 plants famous for air pollution reduction

In 1985 B. C. Wolverton, Ph.D. conducted laboratory experiment, which aim was to check how spider plants placed in a sealed room will deal with carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide present in the air. The results were astonishing – the spider plant reduced carbon monoxide by nearly 94% during first 24 hours. Nitrogen dioxide was almost completely neutralized. This experiment was one of many conducted by Dr. Wolverton and other research groups on the effect of plants on indoor pollution. Results were always similar in at least one point: plants are very effective natural air purifiers.

Plants with such florid names as Heart Leaf Philodendron or mother-in-law’s tongue will help you get rid of excessive amounts of formaldehyde, ammonia and benzene in the air. Some plants have additional features, for example Dracaena deremensis Janet Craig eliminates Xylene from the air, while Boston fern reduces the amount of mercury and arsenic present in the soil.

Areca palm tree scored the highest in NASA independent research on the indoor pollution reducing plants, with lady palm and bamboo palm following Areca as almost equally efficient. Date palm tree had the second best result in formaldehyde reduction. Ficus alii score in air purification can be compared to the rubber plant results, making those two highly effective plants in fighting with toxic substances in the air.

Be aware that plants can't remove dust.. for this you will need to find a good air purifier review and choose a gadget that can remove dust.

Some of the highest scoring plants can be also used as nice decorative elements for the interior design of an apartment or office space. Peace Lily and Chrysanthemum have beautiful flowers and both bloom regularly. On the other hand, plants such as Aloe Vera and English ivy can be used to heal some health problems. Aloe Vera is especially powerful as a means of healing wounds, while English ivy is said to reduce air allergies and remove mold from the interior living space.
